Will the lockdowns work? What all businesses should know about the pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic may inflict a sharp recession on the global economy that might continue throughout the first half of 2020. The contraction has been felt outright, with GDP falling 1.3% and huge uncertainty looming over our current and rapidly evolving environment. Businesses have lost revenue and laid off workers, and unemployment levels are rising sharply. As business investment contracts and corporate bankruptcies soar, the situation is putting significant pressure on the global financial system.

In this RadioFinance session, we will talk to Professor Dale Fisher, who is the Chair of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) steering committee for the World Health Organisation (WHO). He’s also a senior infectious diseases physician at National University Hospital, Singapore. He is a member of the WHO-China joint mission on COVID-19, whose aim is to aid national and international planning in response to the outbreak as well as ensuring readiness in geographic areas not yet affected.

Professor Fisher will share his views on the ongoing pandemic and the steps businesses can take to minimise its effect and contain its spread.

The discussion will focus on these issues:

  • The world’s readiness to fight the pandemic - how long could it take to overcome the situation?
  • Lessons learned from countries such as China, South Korea and Singapore
  • Why lockdowns are important and steps to be taken by countries with less resources
  • The need for companies to rethink ways of doing businesses in the current situation
