The COVID-19 Series: How will China's economy recover from the pandemic?

China has said the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country is over, hours after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a pandemic. New cases have been declining and the number of recovered patients has been increasing.

With China’s situation starting to settle, the country has set its sights on meeting the goals for continuous growth and economic development for the rest of the year. The country has taken measures to restart activities that have been idle following the Lunar New Year holidays. Regulators have introduced supportive policies, officials have relaxed restriction rules on a provincial basis and companies have rushed to resume production. After weeks of empty streets and barely any economic activity, signs of life are emerging in time for spring.

In this RadioFinance session, we will explore how China’s economy, market and society will recover from the pandemic. We would also drill down to the incentives and the policy measures that are being taken by the government to protect and revive the economy.

The discussion will focus on these issues:

  • When will the economy rebound?
  • How does the pandemic affect China's standing in the global economy?
  • How much room does China have in terms of fiscal policy?
  • What measures have been implemented to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) hit by the outbreak?
  • China has announced that it will speed up investment in new infrastructure projects. How effective will this be in combating economic pressure?
  • How has COVID-19 disrupted supply chains and business operations?
  • What are new business opportunities and technology innovations emerging amid and after the pandemic?
